For those of you who have New Orleans on your bucket list, you just might want to check out The Big Easy in Osgrid. Ellen Tiratzo has created a very realistic region, that is true to life. Even the street signs here all reflect the streets of New Orleans.I asked Ellen about her Big Easy so that we could learn more about what inspired her.
“It’s rare that we can go in-world and find a region that takes us back to a place that we love in real life. As a native of New Orleans stuck abroad and unable to go home, that is what the Big Easy region became for me. The Big Easy region is a tribute to New Orleans: its culture, its people, and its music. The Big Easy is about jazz music, Mardi Gras, and joie de vivre. As with all of the Factory regions, the Big Easy region strives to offer something for everyone.
The Big Easy hosts a Library Café, with actual books to read! Each month, I feature a book recommended by a patron, and Ernest and I make a book with a clickable PDF inside. This week we added the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, as per the suggestion of our beloved patron, Halcyon Ludivico. Thanks to our patrons, we are growing quite a nice collection of books!
The idea for creating the Big Easy region came from a nostalgia for home and a need to feel connected during chaotic times. I love living and teaching internationally, but sometimes, especially during the pandemic, I get quite homesick. During the last year, I have often thought back to 2005, when my life was turned upside down when Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans and the surrounding areas. To this day, Six Flags amusement park sits rotting, sunken in the waters of the swamp. A Katrina Memorial commemorates the lives lost during the storm. Wanting to feel that famous New Orleans Joie de Vivre, I decided to build a New Orleans themed region. The Big Easy is not meant to be a replica of the city that care forgot, but rather to replicate the sounds, images, and feelings of my home of New Orleans.
The Big Easy region is full of places that lovers of New Orleans will recognize and people who haven’t gotten a chance to teleport there yet will love. In the Big Easy, we offer many free items and lots of entertainment options. For example, we have the Krewe du Vieux costume shop, New Orleans Hat Factory, a huge Stuff factory, the newly added Lafitte’s Wine café and shop, Zoodoo House of Voodoo, and of course, Preservation Jazz!
Some other interesting sights in the Big Easy include an oak-laden City Park, sunken Six Flags, a Katrina memorial, street car rides, Mardi Gras World, and my favorite, the Honey Island Swamp tour. Watch out for gators! At the back of the swamp, you will find da Killa Rat swamp bar - the locals are more dangerous than the gators! Also, be sure to check out the floats at Mardi Gras World. Throughout the region, there are little nods to the book A Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole. I hope you will be amazed and impressed by them! Other attractions in the region include Big Daddy’s Club, D. H. Holmes Ball Gowns, Lola’s Train Restaurant, Canseco’s Market, Werlein’s Music, Lucky Dogs (with a cat in the bun compartment), and Pirate’s Alley Pub. There are also free shops to rent!
It has been so much fun creating the Big Easy and sharing it with all of you. My co-partner at the Factory, Ernest Moncrieff, had a lot of input and ideas, and brought to life many of the ideas I had for the region. My future plans for the region include yearly Mardi Gras parties, balls, and parades; encouraging creativity in Opensim by offering free shop and housing space; and a custom T-shirt shop. I really love the Big Easy region, and I hope you will too! Come pass a good time!”
As you can see it is all here for you to enjoy! I have spent time here enjoying the gardens too, so beautifully created.
